The Cleveland Browns have made their first official move off the off season. Trading one of their three fifth round picks to the Houston Texans in exchange for starting right tackle Tytus Howard. The Browns and Howard then agreed on a three-year 63 million dollar extension.

The 29 year old Howard who played college football at Alabama State, was the 23rd pick in first round of the 2019 draft. He has found success in Houston playing all of his first seven seasons for the Texans. The 6'5, 322 lbs Howard started at right tackle for Houston, but can also play the right and left guard position along the offensive line as well. That type of versatility is what the Browns need. While they have questions at every position on the offensive line, and injury prone Jack Conklin entering free agency this should give the Browns some stability at the right tackle position.

Howard is a pass blocking specialist who finished with a 77.1 PFF pass block grade last season which was 17th of out of 89 tackles in the NFL. His run blocking however needs work as his PFF run block grade was just 50.7 which was 79 out of 89. Even the with the disparity in his pass and run block he allowed zero sacks in all of the 2025 season. The Browns sorely needed someone who will be able to keep pressure off the quarterback as they struggled in 2025 and were the seventh worst team in sacks allowed.

The trade will bring a veteran presence to a depleted offensive line that is still waiting to see if pro bowl left guard Joel Bitonio is retiring or coming back along with left tackle Dewand Jones. The more moves the Browns can make in the months leading up to the NFL draft will open up the possibilities of players they can select. Right now the Browns need to completely overhaul their offensive, but if they can make enough moves in free agency and through trades, it will allow them to draft the best player available on either side of the football.
