(CLEVELAND, OH) - The Cleveland Cavaliers (39-24, 21-11 home) entered Tuesday night’s game at Rocket Arena as the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. Their opponent was the number one seeded Detroit Pistons (45-15, 21-8 road) led by former Cavs coach JB Bickerstaff. The Pistons won the first three meetings this season against the Cavs.
The two teams met just four days ago in Detroit, and the shorthanded Cavs fell in overtime 122-119. The Cavs were without Donovan Mitchell, Dean Wade, Keon Ellis, and James Harden. Tuesday night the Cavs had Wade, Ellis, and Harden back. The Cavs came out on top in a close game 113-109.
With 9:32 left in the first quarter the Cavs jumped out to a 9-2 lead when James Harden hit a three from the top of the arc and sent the sellout crowd into a frenzy. Bickerstaff took an immediate timeout. With 7:13 left in the opening quarter Allen picked up his send foul. With 6:40 left the Pistons tied the game 11-11. On a fast break with 3:25 left Dennis Schroder scored on a layup and was clearly knocked to the ground, no foul was called by official Ashley Moyer-Gleich. The Cavs led 19-15. With 5:58 on the clock Harden found Sam Merril at the top of the arc and Merrill drained a three to give Cleveland a double digit lead 48-38. With 4:16 left Ellis was called for a personal foul Duren drove the lane. Ellis immediately called for the Cavs bench to challenge it and Cavs coach, reigning Eastern Conference coach of the month Kenny Atkinson agreed. The Cavs won the challenge, and the call was overturned and the Cavs got possession of the ball with an eight point lead. With 2:17 left and the Cavs lead down to just four points, Harden hit a three giving the Cavs a 51-44 advantage. Just 15 seconds into the third quarter Duncan Robinson cut the Cavs lead to 54-51 with a three pointer. With the Cavs lead at just two the Cavs defense stopped the Pistons on two straight possession and then Allen scored in the paint to give the Cavs a 67-63 lead. But at the other end with 7:32 remaining in the third Merrill fouled Harris, he hit the shot and the free throw to pull the Pistons to within a point of the Cavs. After some very sloppy play by both teams with 6:30 left Schroder drove the lane, scored and was fouled by Robinson, his second. Schroder made the free throw and the Cavs led 70-66. With 3:30 remaining former Cav Caris LeVert fouled Thomas Bryant on a three pointer, Bryant hit the three and the free throw to give the Cavs a 79-72 lead. Just 23 seconds later Harden hit Tyson and the second-year man from California hit a three to give the Cavs a 97-86 lead. With 7:03 left after a Harden turnover the Pistons cut the Cleveland lead to 99-92. Then with 6:02 left the Cavs’ lead was at just six points. Atkinson took a time out. Merril said, nope and drained a three giving the Cavs a 107-103 lead with 2:38 remaining on an assist by Harden his seventh of the game. With 1:22 left, Schroder drove the lane and scored giving Cleveland a 110-105 lead. Bickerstaff took a timeout. Once again, the Pistons turned the ball over right after the timeout, this time the Cavs made them pay when Harden scored in the paint to give the Cavs a 112-105 lead with 1:05 left in regulation. After the Pistons failed to score at the other end the Cavs ran about 20 seconds off the clock until Schroder turned the ball over and Thompson dunk cutting the Cavs lead to 112-107 with :21.5 remaining in regulation. The Cavs ran out the clock and secured the 113-109 win.
A concerning thing though is Allen played only four minutes in the second half and went to the locker room after bumping knees with another player during game action. Cavs team surgeon James Rosneck was also seen heading to the locker room whether that means anything or not is unknown.
Duren led all scorers with 24 points in the loss for the Pistons. The Cavs held Detroit’s scoring leader Cunningham to just 10 points, Cunningham is averaging 25.5 per game on the season. Tyson led the Cavs in scoring with 22 points. Mobley and Harden each had 18 points.
