(KENSTON, OH) — For the first time non-pandemic the Painesville Harvey Red Raiders (5-4) football team led by head coach and alum Mickey Mohner qualified for the post season in a while. The Red Raiders traveled to Kenston to face the Bombers (9-1). The Bombers were the 3rd seed, and the Red Raiders were the 14th seed in Division 3 Region 9. The Red Raiders kept it close early before the Bombers post season experience took over on their way to a 38-15 win.

The Red Raiders held the Bombers scoreless on their first drive of the game after Harvey started the game with an onside kick. The drive ended for the Bombers when junior Kicker Parker Munday missed a 41-yard field goal attempt.

Harvey took over the ball at their own 31 yard line and moved the ball down the field to the Bombers 10 yard and what looked like a first down, but the officials spot of the ball was short of the first down marker by a yard which brought up fourth down for the Red Raiders and they were not able to get the ball past the marker and turned the ball over on downs. The Bombers took over the ball and drove down the field 80 yards to the Harvey 10-yard line where the drive stalled and Kenston had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Munday giving the Bombers a 3-0 lead with :13 left in the first quarter.

After the Red Raiders turned the ball over on an interception the Bombers scored on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Bomber’s junior quarterback Nikko Georgiou to freshman receiver Tymir Cardona with 11:31 left in the second quarter to give the Bombers a 10-0 lead after Munday converted the extra point.

Harvey was unable to do anything with their next drive as the Kenston defense stopped them again. The Bombers offense took over and with 4:36 left in the second quarter Georgiou hit a 16-yard pass to Patrick for a TD to extend the lead to 17-0.

With 1:42 left in second quarter Kenston blocked a punt attempt by Harvey and recovered the ball at the Harvey 21. With 1:02 left in the half Patrick took the ball into the end zone from eight yards out to give the Bombers a 24-0 lead.

The final score of the half came with :14 left when Georgiou hit junior Lucas Simmons with a 41-yard pass for a touchdown ending the half with a 31-0 lead.

The night for Georgiou was an impressive one being that it was his first game back since week three when he injured broke the back of his throwing hand against NDCL.

Harvey punted on first possession of second half and was able to move the ball. With 7:20 left in the third quarter Kenston took over on their own 48. Kenston took advantage and Georgiou connected with Carson Rivera-Gebeau from 12 yards out for his fourth TD pass of the game.

The Red Raiders did give up as they put two quick scores up in the fourth quarter. The first came with 11:43 on the game clock when sophomore Davon Badley caught a 36-yard pass from senior Rick Coleman, Jr. and took it to the end zone. With 10:05 left in the fourth quarter after Harvey recovered a Kenston fumble Blaise Collins ran for a 33-yard TD. Harvey converted the two-point conversion to pull the Red Raiders to within 23 points and end the running clock.

The Red Raiders made things even more interesting when they recovered an onside kick and drove into the Bombers territory but turned the ball over on downs with less than eight minutes left in the game. Kenston took over the ball and began to run out the clock.

Mohner talked after the game about how proud he was of what his team accomplished this season. He said, “This should be the standard of Harvey High School football. The standard should be we made the playoffs every year and the next step will be winning a playoff game, maybe hosting a playoff game.” He acknowledged the seniors and how much their hard work was a key to the success and how much the example they set will help in the future. He said, “Rick Coleman, Jr. He does everything for us. I mean he’s been a great player for us. Another guy and unsung hero is Deuce Coffee, Maurice Coffee II, He’s a guy that didn’t play football his freshman and sophomore year, he’s a guy that, he’s our fixer, he’s Mr. Fix It. You know anytime we need anything done he’s the guy I call, and he takes care of it and just his leadership I think has got us going in the right direction. Finally, he mentioned, “A guy like Jaydyn Early that didn’t even play varsity football last year as a junior and spent the whole offseason to get himself in shape and started on both sides of the ball for us. There’s so many guys we have a lot to owe too. And these guys will be able to come back one day at Harvey High School and see their 2021 playoff appearance on the wall and that’s something they can be proud of.”
