Captains shutout Lansing 12-0

(LANSING, MI) – The Lake County offense poured it on against the Lansing Lugnuts on Saturday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium. Led by Tyler Krieger’s five-hit day, the Captains set new season-highs in hits (19) and runs with a 12-0 win over the Lugnuts.
Krieger led the charge with the most explosive offensive showing by a Captain to-date. The switch-hitting second baseman went 5-for-6 at the plate with four singles and a double. Krieger stole two bases, swiping second and third back-to-back in the fourth, drove in two runs and scored four out of the five times he reached base.
The Captains’ second baseman was responsible for the first run of the game when Lake County took the lead in the fourth inning. Krieger led off with a single, stole second, then stole third and scored on an RBI ground out by Yonathan Mendoza. That fourth inning yielded just one run and proved to be one of the Captains’ lightest offensive innings of the afternoon.
In the fifth, the Captains began to distance themselves from the Lugnuts. Lake County batted around for the first time this year and scored five runs in the inning on five hits and a pair of Lansing errors. Bobby Ison opened the scoring with an RBI single and Nathan Lukes added another run with a ground ball to second that Lansing second baseman Gunnar Heidt booted. Two batters after the error, Krieger drove home two runs with a single and later scored on a throwing error by Lansing shortstop Aaron Attaway.
The Captains added three more runs in the seventh inning to further widen the margin. Francisco Mejia and Anthony Miller both contributed RBI singles and Sam Haggerty drove in a run on a fielder’s choice when he beat out a ground ball that could have been an inning-ending double play.
The Captains led 9-0 going to the eighth, but they kept scoring. Mendoza drove in a run with a single and Willi Castro scored on a wild pitch to put the Captains up, 11-0. Mejia added an RBI single in the ninth to finish the scoring.
Six Lake County hitters had multiple hits in the ballgame and three had multiple RBI. Haggerty and Miller both had three-hit days at the plate. Haggerty made all three of his hits extra-base hits with three doubles, while Miller went 3-for-5 with three singles. Both drove in a run and scored a run.
Casey Shane pitched five shutout innings to earn his second win of the year. Shane (2-1) walked five men, but only gave up one hit and struck out four in the winning effort.
Ryan Cook took the loss for Lansing. The right-hander gave up six runs, four earned over 4.2 innings. Cook (0-2) gave up seven hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Lake County will try to split the four-game series when they play the series finale at Lansing on Sunday afternoon. First pitch at Cooley Law School Stadium is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. LHP Sam Hentges will pitch for the Captains against LHP Tayler Saucedo.
