(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains and South Bend Cubs played the second of their two makeup games from snow outs in April on Wednesday with their second double header and fifth game within a 48-hour period. The two teams split a twin bill on Monday, the Cubs won the single game yesterday and on Wednesday night the Cubs took game one in 12 innings 6-4. The Captains took game two, 5-2 to send the crowd of 1,414 at Classic Park home with a split.

GAME ONE
The Cubs struck early in game one with single runs in the first and second inning off Captains starting pitcher Gregori "Vasky" Vasquez.

Vasquez went six innings, really settling down after the second innings allowing only two base runners in his final four innings, one runner reached on an error and the other on a double.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Captains offense woke up just enough to tie the game with two runs. With one out in the inning Ernie Clement doubled over the third base bag. Austen Wade then singled to center field to put men on first and third. Nolan Jones then followed with a single center field and Clement scored the Captains first run. Wade advanced to third on the play. Jose Vincente then struck the Captains third straight single and Wade trotted home tying the game 2-2.

The Cubs scored with the “Rob Manfred Runner” (runners start at second base to start the inning in extra innings) in the top of the ninth inning. Austin Filiere scored after moving to third on a single by Miguel Amaya and then scored on a single by Nelson Velasquez. The Cubs could score no more in the inning and took a 3-2 lead to the bottom of the ninth.
The Captains returned the favor in the bottom of the ninth as the “Rob Manfred Runner” Nolan Jones score on a single by Jorma Rodriguez to tie the game 3-3.

The Cubs came right back in the tenth inning and scored another run courtesy of the “RMR” Zach Davis, when Chris singleton laid down a sacrifice bunt and Captains reliever Skylar Arias made an errant throw to first base. Not only did the Cubs score, but Captains second baseman Tyler Friis was injured on the play when Singleton clipped Friis at first base.
Just like in the ninth inning the Captains answered back when the “RMR” Josh Rolette, who served as the runner in place of the pitcher, who took Friis’s place in the batting order when Friis left the game injured and Jorma Rodriguez entered the game to play second base. Rodriguez had been the designated hitter. Rolette scored with one out on a double by Wade. Wade was then thrown out at third base trying to stretch the two bagger into a triple.

The top of the twelfth began with the “RMR” runner Rafael Narea scoring when the first hitter of the inning Zach Davis bunted, and Captains reliever Manuel Alvarez made an errant throw to the second baseman who was covering first base. Davis ended up at second base on the play. He moved to third base when Singleton was retired on another bunt to Alvarez. Alvarez then uncorked a wild pitch with Jhonny Bethencourt at the plate and Singleton came home with the Cubs sixth run.

Alvarez took the loss for Lake County. He pitched two innings allowing two runs, neither run was earned. He issued one base on balls and struck out three Cubs. With the loss he falls to 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA. Manuel Rodriguez picked up the win in relief for the Cubs. Rodriguez went three innings, blew the save. He allowed one unearned run on three hits, he issued one base on balls and struck out three Captains. With the win Rodriguez improves to 1-1 with an 8.16 ERA.

GAME TWO
Just like game one the Cubs scored first in the first inning with a single run off Captains starter Cameron Mingo. The run came when Chris Singleton led the game off with a double and then scored two batters later when Jared Young singled.

The Captains got on the board and tied the game in the second inning when Jose Vincente belted his third home of the season to put the score at 1-1 after two frames.

The Captains then took the lead 2-1 in the fourth inning when Austen Wade led the inning off with a single and then advanced to third base when Oscar Gonzalez. After Tyler Friis struck out, Ulysses Cantu doubled plating Wade with the go ahead run.

The Captains added on in the fifth inning with three more runs when they drew four bases on balls, two singles and a Cubs error resulted in the scoring. The Captains lead was now 5-1.

The Cubs made comeback in the seventh inning but fell short as they could only manage one run off Lake County reliever Jonathan Teaney. Teaney had a successful night as he lowered his ERA from 16.36 to 15.75.

Jesus Camargo took the loos for the Cubs. Camargo, started the game for South Bend and went four innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He issued one base on balls and struck out seven Captains batters. With the loss Camargo falls to 1-1 with a 3.52 ERA. Cameron Mingo picked up the win for Lake County. Mingo was making his first appearance of the season with Lake County. Mingo went six innings allowing only one run on five hits. He also issued two base on balls and struck out six Cubs hitters. With the win Mingo improves to 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA.

The two teams will finish the unconventional six game series on Thursday morning at 11 a.m. Southpaw Brendon Little will be on the mound for the Cubs. Little, is 2-2 with a 5.09 ERA. The Captains will counter with their own lefty, Francisco Perez. Perez, is 1-3 with a 5.46 ERA.
