Monsters get a point, fall in Rochester 3-2 in overtime

(CLEVELAND, OH) - The Rochester Americans defeated the Cleveland Monsters Friday night by a score of 3-2 in overtime. This is the second of eight matchups between these clubs this year. The Monsters looked to end a season high three game losing streak. Rochester was extremely shorthanded for the match up, causing two defensemen to act as forwards on the fourth line.
Monsters’ co-captain Zac Dalpe opened the scoring for Cleveland at 11:45 of the first period. A turnover at center by Rochester led to Marko Dano picking up a puck, passing up to Zac Dalpe, who skated into the zone and beat the Americans’ goalie five-hole. It was a shorthanded goal. This was the Monsters’ sixth shorthanded goal of the year to lead the American Hockey League. This goal put Zac Dalpe into, sole position of second in all time Monsters’ goals at 59. “Dalpe trails Andrew Aggozzino by eight for all time goals,” said Ryan, who answered my question on this on Twitter (thanks, Ryan!)
The second period was all Rochester. The scoring started just 3:27 in. Kevin Porter was near the net on the stick side of the Monsters’ goalie and fed to the middle of the lane where Lawrence Pilut was and, due to good screening in front, beat Matiss. Secondary assist went to Andrew Oglevie. The second American goal came at 6:19, a powerplay goal. An O-zone faceoff win by Zach Redmond, sent back to Lawrence Pilut, who fed Jean-Sebastien Dea on top of the faceoff circle where he fired a wrister glove side past Matiss.
With time running down in the third period, the Monsters were able to tie things up. A wrist shot from Ryan Maclnnis tied things up. He was right in the middle of the lane. The secondary assist went to Gabriel Carllson and primary to Adam Clendening. This led the game into overtime. Jean-Sebastien Dea got on a breakaway just 56 seconds in; he did not score, but he did shoot, which went off Matiss’ pads and Andrew Oglevie came swooping in for the rebound to get the game winning goal.
Looking back at the keys for tonight’s game, key one was to find the power play; the Monsters did not, and it has now been seven straight games without a power play - they are 0/29 in that span and 0/3 tonight. Key two was to control the puck more; the Monsters did a good job on this. The final key tonight was win board battles, but there weren’t too many of these tonight. The player of the game was Zac Dalpe.
The Monsters started Matiss Kivlenieks in net and he stopped 20 of 23 shots faced in 60:56 of game time. The Americans countered with Jonas Johansson who stopped 25 of 27 shots faced in 60:54 of game time. The first star went to Andrew Oglevie with the game winning goal; he also had an assist. The second star went to Lawrence Pilut with a goal and two assists. The third star went to Jean-Sebastien Dea with a goal and an assist.
Next up for Cleveland is the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night. The Crunch is currently 7-6-2-0 on the year and in seventh place in the North Division with 16 points. Key one will be get the power play going - if the Monsters do not get a power play goal, they will tie the longest streak game-wise in Monsters’ history without a power play goal. The second key will be finding a way to get the two points to build some momentum. The third key will be return to the physical level of play which has made them play better.
