Eastlake North Stays Undefeated, Shutouts Harvey 21-0

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The undefeated 3-0 Eastlake North Rangers hosted the 1-2 Harvey Red Raiders on Friday night in what many expected to be a high scoring affair as the Rangers have scored 120 points in their first three games, while just giving up 23. The Red Raiders were right behind them scoring 104 points, but have given up 116. Last year the Rangers took the victory beating Harvey 47-22. This year Harvey was looking to hand North their first loss, and North was looking to prove they are a different breed in the Chagrin Valley Conference.
Eastlake North would not be denied the win tonight after a back and forth defensive battle in the first half, the Rangers came out in the second half with ferocity and scored two more touchdowns, while not allowing anywhere near the endzone, winning the game 21-0 and moving to 4-0 on the season.
North's head coach Shawn Dodd had this to say before the game. "We have such a great team. Our offense is tough and our defense have worked really hard. They want a shutout every night. The weight room this year has been exceptional. The team has really put in a lot of work to be in this position."
Harvey's head coach Marcus Jones talked about coming together as a team. "The most important thing is becoming a cohesive unit. One team. We have had a lot of team activities, we do a lot of things together. We are a young team, we only have nine seniors. I think the future is bright and we will thrive. Right now we are learning to win.
The Red Raiders won the toss and elected to defer until the second half. North moved the ball down the field a scored on the opening drive on a one-yard touchdown run by junior Josh Fenick. The extra point was blocked and North has the lead 6-0 with 7:57 left in the first quarter.
After the first score by North both teams defenses took over and it was a battle of wills, as neither team wanted to give up a score. North's junior defensive lineman John Murphy was a brick wall. He was in the backfield all night taking away any momentum Harvey would get. Harvey also played tough after the first score. Red Raiders freshman Kyden Kamara recovered a fumble on North's 26-yard line, but North made a 4th down stop and that was the closest Harvey would come to the endzone. Eastlake took a 6-0 lead into halftime
When the second half started you could see in the eyes of the Rangers players how much this win and a shutout meant to them, as they again drove down the field on their first drive of the second half and scored on a 16-yard rushing touchdown by junior Javion Whaley. Josh Fenick would punch in the two-point conversion and North led 14-0. Fenick would add another touchdown, his second of the game, with just seconds left in the third quarter, this one, a three-yard rushing score. The Rangers controlled the fourth quarter, and would run the clock out, and achieving what the whole team wanted. A victory to move to 4-0, and a shutout win.
Shawn Dodd after being asked about still being undefeated said "4-0 is fantastic you don't go into a season thinking those things, our goal isn't to be 10-0 right now, it's to win one game at a time. It's like those old coaching cliches, but they are true."
Next week the (4-0) Eastlake North Ranger will face their toughest test of the season so far, traveling to (2-2) Chardon to face the Hilltoppers on the road. The (1-3) Harvey Red Raiders will look for their second win of the season as they play host to the (0-4) Lutheran West Longhorns at home in Painesville. Both games are scheduled for Friday, September 18th, with 7:00 pm start times.
