Sunday afternoon baseball at Classic Park through the years has at times turned into an adventure.  Today's game was one of those days as the South Bend Cubs defeated the Captains 6-4.

The Cubs jumped on Captains starter Tom Pannone early and often.  In the first inning the Cubs put three runs on the board, courtesy of a two run home run by Eloy Jimenez.  Eddie Julio Martinez then followed up with a solo shot.  The home run by Jimenez was his sixth and Martinez's shot was his fifth of the season.

The Cubs knocked Pannone out of the game in the third inning with another run to take a 4-0 lead.  The The Captains got on the board in the the fourth inning when Nathan Lukes tripled to lead of the frame.  Lukes scored when the next hitter Connor Marabell grounded out.

The Cubs added on in the fifth and sixth inning with single runs in each inning off Captains reliever Matt Whitehouse.  Captains manager Tony Mansolino was thrown out by home plate umpire Austin Jones in the top of the sixth inning.  The pair had a small disagreement and Mansolino voiced his displeasure loudly, before exiting the field.

The Captains added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Lukes led off the inning with a double.  Yonathan Mendoza then singled and Lukes scored the Captains second run of the game closing the gap to 6-2.

The Captains attempted a come back in the ninth inning, but it fell short as they could only manage two runs.

Pannone took the loss for Lake County.  With the loss the lefty falls to 3-3 with a 3.21 ERA.  South Bend starter Preston Morrison picked up the win.  Morrison gave up one run in five innings to improve to 3-2 with a 3.96 ERA

The four game series will conclude on Monday night at 6:30 p.m.  Lefty Carson Sands will take the mound for South Bend.  Sands is 4-0 with a 3.26 ERA.  Casey Shane will be on the mound for the Captains.  Shane, a righty is 4-1 with a 3.79 ERA.
