Captains win on walk off error 3-2

(EASTLAKE, OH) – The Lake County Captains returned home on Tuesday night to start a six-game series and homestand with the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Captains went 3-3 on the road trip at Fort Wayne against the TinCaps. The homestand began in dramatic fashion as the Captains got the walk off win on an error 3-2 in front of 1,642 happy fans at Classic Park.

Hunter Gaddis, a righthander started on the mound for the Captains and Keider Montero another righthander was on the hill for the Whitecaps. Coming into the outing game with an ERA of 6.84 and a 2-4 record in six starts. Both the Whitecaps and Captains offenses did not get the memo as through five innings. The Whitecaps managed two runs only one earned off Gaddis in five innings on four base hits as he struck out seven West Michigan batters. Meanwhile Captains hitters managed on run off Montero in five and a third innings and that run was unearned. He allowed only three hits, issued two base on balls and struck out six.

The Whitecaps first run came in the third inning courtesy of two Captains errors. A throwing error by Joe Naranjo which allowed Trei Cruz to reach base. After Cruz stole second base, his first of the season Quentin Holmes made a fielding error which allowed Cooper Johnson to reach base and Cruz scored.
The Whitecaps second run came in the fourth inning when Bryant Packard led off with a double and was driven home by Eric De La Rosa to give West Michigan a 2-0 lead.

The only run of the game for the Captains came in the sixth inning when Bryan Lavastida reached on a fielder’s choice and scored when Aaron Bracho reached on a throwing error to cut the Whitecaps lead to 2-1.

The Captains loaded the bases in the ninth inning with when Jose Tena drew a base on balls with one out, Brayan Rocchio then singled. Final Will Brennan drew a base on balls. George Valera came to the plate and a three one pitch hit a routine popup to West Michigan second baseman Wenceel Perez, he had it in his glove and it just popped out fell on the ground and two runs crossed the plate to give the Captains a 3-2 win.

Alec Wisely picked up the win for Lake County. Wisely pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out one Whitecaps batter. With the win Wisely improves to 1-0 with a 7.20 ERA. Zack Hess took the loss for West Michigan. Hess pitched two thirds of an inning in the ninth. He allowed two runs neither was earned on one hit, he walked two Captains and struck out one. 
With the win the Captains move back over the .500 mark at 19-18.

The Captains and Whitecaps will play game two of the six game series on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. The Captains will send Righthander Xzavion Curry to the mound. Curry will be making his first home start of the season. He is currently 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA. Brendan White another righthander will be on the hill for West Michigan. White is 1-0 with a 3.24 ERA.
