On Friday night the Wickliffe Blue Devils travel just up the road to Richmond Heights to face the Spartans. Their goal was to do something that hadn’t
been done by a Wickliffe football team since 1997 and that was start the season 6-0. They accomplished their goal with a 45-8 romp over an undermanned Spartans team.

The scoring came early and often for the Blue Devils as Senior quarterback Brad Dieterich connect with Sophomore Chase Fortkamp just :42 into the game on a 63-yard touchdown pass that Fortkamp jumped over three defenders to grab and ramble into the end zone giving Wickliffe a 7-0 lead after Dieterich converted the extra-point.

Fortkamp showing his versatility then took the ball 28 yards into the end zone with 5:03 left on the first quarter clock. The score gave Wickliffe a 14-0 lead after the XP conversion by Dieterich.

Wickliffe’s all-time leading rusher, Senior Isaac Pettway then got in on the offensive act as he scampered 10 yards for the Blue Devils third TD of the first quarter with 2:23 left on the clock extending their lead to 21-0 after the conversion.

The Blue Devils took a 28-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. With 8:57 left in the second quarter Dieterich hit Pettway with a beautiful touch pass that the senior Tony Fisher Award nominee pulled in and trotted into the end zone for Wickliffe’s fourth touchdown of the first half.

The Spartans got on the board for the only time in the game with 10:14 remaining in the third quarter when Senior Jonathan McWilliams rambled 61 yards for pay dirt. The Spartans converted the two-point conversion on a run by Junior Jalen Johnson to pull Richmond Hts to within twenty points at 28-8.

The Blue Devils answered back in their first possession of the second half when Pettway rumbled five-yards into the end zone to increase the Blue Devils lead to twenty-seven at 35-8 with 6:09 remaining in the third quarter.

The final touchdown of the night came when Sophomore Isaiah Bolon ran in from eight yards out with 2:46 left in the third quarter and gave the Blue Devils a 34-point lead.

Dieterich capped off the game’s scoring with 7:13 left in the game when he connected on a 23-yard field goal to give the Blue Devils the 45-8 lead.

Wickliffe coach Marce Porcello commented after the game that, “First time since 1997 we’ve been 6-0. And these guys answered the challenge this week and you know executed on both sides of the ball.” He went on to compliment his defense, “I thought defensively we executed. We came out and we hit, they have some weapons on offense and our defense executed.” He finished by saying, “Then offensively we played really well as well. Chase and Isaac had big nights tonight.”

As mentioned by Porcello, Pettway and Fortkamp once again put up big numbers. Pettway ran the ball 16 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught one pass for 20 yards and a touchdown. Fortkamp ran the ball three times for 38 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 7 yards and a touchdown.

The Blue Devils will attempt to remain undefeated and will face a tough test next week when they host the Cuyahoga Hts. Redskins at Wickliffe Memorial Stadium at 7:00 p.m..
