Captains blanked 5-0 by Loons

(EASTLAKE, OH) – On Wednesday Night the Lake County Captains and Great Lakes Loons partook in game two of their six game series. The Captains won game won 7-5. Wednesday was a different story as the Loons blanked the Captains 5-0 in front of 1,837 at Classic Park.

The game was scoreless through three innings. Lefty Alec Gamboa was on the hill for Great Lakes and throwing blanks. Xzavion Curry started for Lake County. The scoreless tie ended with the first hitter of the fourth inning Josh Outman blasted a solo home run to right field. The homer was Outman’s ninth of the season.

The fifth inning did not start any better for Curry. This time it was Andy Pages who belted a solo home run to give the Loons a 2-0 lead. The Loons picked up another run in the inning when Deacon Liput reached first base on an error by Joe Naranjo. Curry then balked allowing Liput to move to second base. Curry then scored when Zac Ching smacked a line drive double to right field giving the Loons a 3-0 advantage.
Curry worked into the seventh inning when he retired the first batter striking out Pages to start the inning. His night came to an end one batter later when Joe Vranesh went deep over the right center field fence to extend the lead to 4-0. The home run was Vranesh’s sixth of the season. Tim Herrin came in to relieve Curry. Herrin recorded the last two outs of the inning giving way to Kellen Rholl with one out in the ninth inning.



















Rholl’s entrance into the game was not successful with a runner on the third that was Herrin’s responsibility the first batter he faced Rholl gave up a double to Pages driving home Justin Yurchak with the final Loons run of the night capping the scoring at 5-0. 

Gamboa picked up the win for the Loons going five shut out innings allowing just two hits and striking out five. With the win the lefty improves to 3-3 with a 3.91 ERA. Curry took the loss pitching six and one thirds innings allowing four runs three were earned, scattering four hits, three of which were home runs. He also struck out eight Loons hitters. The loss was Curry’s first as Captains and is now 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA.

The two clubs will play game three of the series on Thursday Night at 7:00 p.m. Righthander Logan Boyer will take the mound for the Loons. Boyer is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA. The Captains will send Zach Draper to the hill. Draper will be making his first appearance of the year for the Captains. Draper did appear in with Captains on three separate occasions in 2017, 2018 and 2019 with a combined record in 30 appearances, 14 as a starter of 9-5 with a 3.18 ERA in 116 innings striking out 101 batters and issuing 39 base on balls.
