Blue Devils throttle Bison 50-14

(BEACHWOOD, OH) - Heading into Friday night’s game the Wickliffe Blue Devils remained undefeated at 4-0. They traveled to Beachwood to face the 2-2 Bison, who lost a tough one in week four 22-12 against the Fairport Harbor Skippers.
On Friday night both teams got off to a sluggish start to say the least as the game was scoreless when the opening quarter ended.
With 5:18 remaining in the second quarter, the Blue Devils broke through when junior Cole Vanetta took the ball into the end zone on a 12-yard run giving Wickliffe a 7-0 lead after sophomore Braylen Torrence converted the extra point.
If the Blue Devils taking a 7-0 lead wasn’t bad enough for the Bison, disaster then struck times two. After the first TD the Bison fumbled the kickoff and the Blue Devils recovered at the Bison 31. One play later Wickliffe led 15-0 when senior Nick Oboczky scored on the ground from 31 yards. Oboczky then ran the ball in on the two-point conversion with 5:05 left in the first half.
The second disaster came on the next kickoff as the Bison fumbled again and Wickliffe recovered once again at the Beachwood 31. Three plays later sophomore quarterback Jagz Zivnoska connected with Colton Allen Johns for a 30-yard TD. Wickliffe led 22-0 with 3:38 left in the opening half.
With 1:05 left in the half the Bison got on the board completing a six play 62-yard drive when senior Jordan Uria hit sophomore De’Andre Sims for a 19-yard touchdown. The Wickliffe lead was cut to15 points.
Wickliffe responded quickly with just :05 left on the first half game clock when Zivnoska threw his second TD pass of the half to Johns. This time he hit him from 21 yards giving the Blue Devils a decisive 29-7 lead at the half.
After the Bison celebrated their homecoming at halftime, they honored the homecoming court with an 11 play 60-yard drive capped off by a three-yard TD pass from Uria to junior Jackson Klein for the Bison second score of the game with 7:21 left in the third quarter.
The rest of the game belonged to the Blue Devils as the defense responded stopping the Bison, including Vanetta scored his second TD of the contest, this time on defense when he scored on a 50-yard pick-six giving Wickliffe a 43-14 lead with 8:10 left in the final quarter.
Once again Wickliffe’s offense was on point as they racked up 369 yards, 318 on the ground led once again by Oboczky as he carried the ball 18 times for 237 yards, including a 70-yard run and two TDs.
Zivnoska was 2 of 4 through the air for 51 yards and two TDs.
The Blue Devils will once again be on the road next Friday as they travel west to play Independence who earned their third win on Friday night defeating Trinity 30-6. Game time is 7 pm.
