Captains blown out by Lugnuts 8-1

(EASTLAKE, OH) – The Lake County Captains returned home on Tuesday night after completing a six-game road trip to Dayton where they went 4-2 including a three-game win streak to finish the series. The Lansing Lugnuts (Oakland Athletics) were in town for game one of a six game series, and a 12 game homestand. Unfortunately for the 2,236 in attendance at Classic Park aside from Micah Pries the Captains bats did not arrive in time for the game as Lansing dominated the Captains 8-1.
The Lugnuts got on the board early in the second inning with two outs in the inning Jared McDonald hit his second home run of the season over the right center field wall to give the Lugnuts a 1-0.
The Lugnuts second run came in the third inning when Elvis Peralta led off the inning with a single. Yerdel Vargas then followed with a single to right field and Peralta took two bases moving to third. Cobie Vance then hit a ground ball to third baseman Raynel Delgado and Vargas was thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice Peralta crossed home plate with the Lugnuts second run, Vance was safe at first base.
The Lugnuts picked up two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Tim Herrin came in to relieve Captains starter Zach Draper. Herrin got the first batter he faced on strikes and then gave up a double to Lester Madden. Peralta then reached on a fielding error by Delgado and Madden ended up at third base. Vargas then reached first on a bunt singled driving home Madden. Vargas ended up at second base on the throw by Delgado to first base that ended up rolling down the right line, Peralta then scored on the error giving Lansing a 4-0.
The Captains avoided the shut out in the eighth inning when Pries went deep hitting a solo shot over the right field fence to close the gap to three runs at 4-1. The home run for Pries was second of the season. Pries, the Captains designated hitter had three of the team’s six hits including the above-mentioned home run and two singles. Pries is now hitting .414.
To cap the night off the Lugnuts scored four more runs off Captains reliever Kellen Rholl. He then rolled out of the game without recording an out, He issued four base on balls and three hits surrendering all four runs.
Jack Cushing picked up the win for the Lugnuts. He pitched five and one third scoreless innings scattering three hits. He issued one base on balls and struck out six. With the win Cushing improves to 5-0 with a 1.80 ERA. Draper took the loss. He went six innings allowing two runs, both earned on five hits. He also struck out 4 and issued two base on balls. With the loss he falls to 0-2 with a 4.02 ERA.
Game two of the six game series will be at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night. The Lugnuts will send Jorge Juan to the mound. Juan, a righthander is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA. The Captains will counter with their own righthander Kevin Coulter. Coulter is 5-3 with a 5.89 ERA.
