(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains and Bowling Green Hot Rods played the final game of their three-game series on Friday night and unlike game two where the Hot Rods scored 16 unanswered runs in route to a 16-4-win Friday’s game was a pitcher’s duel. But in the end, it was not enough as the Captains were swept 3-2.
The Hot Rods took the lead first in the third inning with a single run off Captains starter Shaggy Turner. With one out in the inning Grant Witherspoon singled to right field. After Turner retired the next hitter Jonathan Aranda singled to left field and Witherspoon moved to second base. Former Captains Ruben Cardenas then singled to left field and Witherspoon crossed home plate with the first run of the game.
The Captains took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Raynel Delgado and Clark Scolamiero led off the inning with back to back singles. With men on first and third Daniel Schneemann hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Delgado and tie the game 1-1. Scolamiero then stole second base, it was his sixth theft of the season. Ulysses Cantu then singled and Scolamiero moved to third base. Again, with runners on the corners another Captains batter come through with a fly ball, this time it was Quentin Holmes with a sac-fly to left right field and Scolamiero trotted home giving the Captains a 2-1 lead.
But in the ninth inning when the Hot Rods loaded the bases with two outs and Cardenas came to the plate and killed his former team with a flair single to center field driving home two runs and giving the Hot Rods a 3-2 lead.
Unfortunately for the 6,171 in attendance the Captains could do nothing in the bottom of the ninth going down 1-2-3 completing the sweep for the Hot Rods.
Hector Figueroa picked up the win in relief for the Hot Rods. Figueroa went three innings to finish the game allowing just one hit and one base on balls and striking out three. With the win he improves to 1-1 with a 1.17 ERA. Jake Miednik took the loss for Lake County. Miednik entered the game with a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, blew the save and took the loss giving up two runs in the ninth. In the two innings he gave up the two runs on three hits and issued one base on balls and struck out two hitters. With the loss he falls to 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA.
Saturday night the Captains will welcome the Dayton Dragons to town with a 7:00 p.m. start. The game will be the first of a four-game series that will run through Tuesday. Righthander Adrian Rodriguez will be on the mound for the Dragons. Rodriguez is 5-3 with a 3.34 ERA. Ethan Hankins will be on the mound for the Captains. Hankins a big righthander is 0-2 with a 2.97 ERA.
