(EASTLAKE, OH) – On Wednesday night the Lake County Captains hope to get back on track against the Great Lakes Loons after being drubbed by the Loons 17-6 on Tuesday night. This game was the opposite of Tuesday’s game, but the result was the same as the Loons came out on top again 4-3 sending the 1,412 fans at Classic Park home with frowns on their faces.

The Captains got on the board in the first inning when Jose Tena smashed a one out double to left field. He came home with the first run of the game when Jhonkensy Noel singled past the third baseman giving Lake County a 1-0.

The Loons took the lead 2-1 in the top of the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Ryan Ward and Eddys Leonard. Then Andy Pages singled to put the Loons on top.

Both starting pitchers Gavin Stone for the Loons and Tanner Burns for the Captains pitched well. Stone went five innings allowing the one run, it was earned on hits. He also struck out eight Captains hitters. Burns went four innings allowing the two runs, both earned while allowing five hits and issuing two base on balls while striking out four Loons.

The Loons added two insurance runs in the eighth inning. The big blow in the inning was a leadoff home run by Brandon Lewis. The long ball was his 16th of the season.

The Captains attempted to mount a comeback in the eighth inning when Christian Cairo singled to leadoff the inning. Gianpaul Gonzalez then grounded out and moved Cairo to second base. Cairo then advanced to third on a wild pitch by Loon’s reliever Antonio Knowles. After Quentin Holmes struck out swinging Julian Escobedo singled to left field and Cairo came home with the Captains second run. Jose Tena then reached base on a dropped third strike that ended up being a wild pitch moving Escobedo to second base. Escobedo then advanced to third base when Knowles issued a base on balls to Cleveland Indians first baseman Bobby Bradley who was playing his second game with Lake County on an injury rehab assignment. But that was the extent. Noel grounded out to end the threat keeping the Loons lead at two runs.

The Captains had one final gasp in the bottom of the ninth inning when Joe Naranjo led off by drawing a base on balls. While Micah Pries was at the plate Great Lakes reliever Andrew Shaps uncorked a wild pitch moving Naranjo to second base. After Pries struck out looking Christian Cairo smashed a line drive single to left field driving Naranjo home, closing the gap to one run at 4-3. With Cairo at first base Johnathan Rodriguez pinch hit for Gianpaul Gonzalez and drew a base on balls. At that point Loons Skipper Austin Chubb replaced Shaps on the mound with lefty Jeff Belge. Raynel Delgado then grounded out to the shortstop on a high chopper moving the runners to second and third with two outs. Escobedo worked the count to 3-2 when Belge hit him with a pitch loading the bases for Tena. It looked like a great scenario for the Captains to either tie the game or walk it off. Things did not work out as Tena grounded to the shortstop Leonel Valera who made a nice throw to first base and retired Tena to end the threat and preserve the Loons 4-3 win.

Stone picked up the win for the Loons and improves to 1-0 with a 7.00 ERA. Belge picked up his third save of the season lowering his ERA to 6.21. Burns took the loss for Lake County and falls to 2-5 with a 3.88 ERA.

Bradley had four more plate appearances in tonight’s game and went 0-3 with a base on balls and two more strike outs. Bradley k’d twice in two at bats on Tuesday night.

The Captains and Loons will play game three of the six game series on Thursday night at 7 p.m. Hyun-II Choi will take the mound for the Loons. Choi a righthander is 0-0 with a 1.93 ERA. Xzavion Curry will be on the hill for Lake County. Curry is 4-1 with a 2.89 ERA, he is also a righthander.
