(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains returned home on Tuesday night to begin a six-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts (Oakland Athletics). Lake County returned to Classic Park after splitting a six-game series against the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond. The Captains pitching was good but two costly errors by the defense and an offense as cold as the Eastlake night air resulted in a 3-1 Lugnuts win in front of 1,118 heart souls in attendance.

Captains starting pitcher Tanner Bibee had a rough night. He did pitch badly, but the baseball kept finding him. He was hit twice by batted balls and the second one a single with no outs by Lugnuts Austin Beck in the fourth inning forced Bibee from the game. Matt “Shaggy” Turner entered the game in relief of Bibee. The first batter Turner faced Brett Harris grounded into a fielder’s choice, Beck was retired at second and Harris reached first base safely. Turner then uncorked a wild pitch with Patrick McColl at the plate moving Harris to second base. Harris then advanced to third base when Captains second baseman Raynel Delgado made an error and McColl was safe at first base. Harris finally crossed the plate when Captains catcher Micael Ramirez was charged with a passed ball giving the Lugnuts a 1-0 lead.

The Captains however struck back in the fifth inning tying the game 1-1. With one out in the fifth inning Delgado reached on an error by Lugnuts shortstop Euribiel Angeles. Delgado moved all the way to third base when Ramirez singled to right field. Delgado then crossed the plate when Gabriel Rodriguez flew out to centerfield tying the game 1-1.

The Lugnuts regained the lead in the eighth inning courtesy of two singles (Beck, McColl) and an RBI double by Harris. The other RBI came on a Sacrifice-fly to right field by Joshwan Wright to give the Lugnuts a two-run lead.

The Captains and Lugnuts will play game two of the series on Wednesday night at 6:35 pm. Righthander Joey Estes will take the mound for the Lugnuts. Estes is 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA. Aaron Davenport takes the hill for Lake County. Davenport, also a righthander is 0-1 with a 1.35 ERA.
