(EASTLAKE, OH) - .The Lake County Captains and Cedar Rapids Kernel’s played game five of their six game series on Saturday night at Classic Park. The Kernels ended the Captains five game winning streak on Friday night. Lake County got right back on track Saturday night with a shut out of the Kernels 6-0 sending the 4,179 in attendance home happy.

The Captains got on the board first in the third inning when Aaron Bracho and Joe Naranjo each hit solo home runs. The home run for Bracho was his eighth, it just cleared the left field wall. Naranjo’s longball was 16th of the season and was deep over the right center field fence.

The Captains added three more runs in the sixth inning when The Captains had two doubles and a single to increase the lead to 5-0.

The final run came in the eighth inning on a wild pitch by Kernel’s Jon Olson scoring Connor Kokx who had reached base earlier in the inning on a single.

Meanwhile Captains starter Aaron Davenport was nearly unhittable as he pitched six innings allowing just one hit and two base on balls while striking out eight. Davenport a righthander did not give up the hit until there were two outs in the fifth inning and Dylan Neuse doubled to center field and that was it.

Davenport picked up the win as the bullpen (Lenny Torres two inning, Matt Turner one innings) came in and pitched three hitless and scoreless innings. With the win Davenport improves to 5-6 with a 4.60 ERA. Cedar Rapids starter Jaylen Nowlin, a lefty took the loss for the Kernels falling to 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA.

With the win the Captains magic number to clinch the Midwest League Eastern Division second half title is now 12 as they remain to games ahead of the West Michigan Whitecaps.

The two teams will finish the series on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm. The Kernel’s have not announced their starter. The Captains will send Doug Nikhazy to the hill. Nikhazy, a lefty will be making his second start in the series. He got the win in the first game of the series to improve to 4-4 with a 3.16 ERA.
