(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains and Great Lakes Loons played game three of their four game series on Monday night at Classic Park. The two teams split the first two games so game three was to see who could take control of the series. It was another pitcher duel, but the Great Lakes bats came alive just enough in the late innings to secure the win 3-0 and send the crowd of 2,110 at Classic Park home unhappy.
Much like Sunday night's game the two teams took part in a pitcher’s duel. Jean Carlos Mejia was on the mound for the Captains and did not allow a hit until one out in the seventh inning. While Great Lakes starter lefthander John Rooney was making his Midwest League debut and went three innings allowing one hit. Reliever Bryan Warzek then came in and pitched two and two thirds innings allowing only one base hit. He was followed by Sven Schueller who went one and one third innings allowing three hits, but no runs.
In the top of the eighth inning the Loons broke through with a run off Captains reliever Robert Broom. The Captains put two runners on base in the bottom of the inning with one out but could not get them past third base and the inning ended with the Loons still leading 1-0.
Thing fell apart even further in the ninth inning for the Captains as the usually reliable Kyle Nelson entered the game and allowed two runs, one earned in one inning of work. Nelson had been so reliable that giving up the one earned run only raised his ERA on the season to a microscopic 0.76.
Again, in the ninth inning the Captains put runners on first and second with one out but failed to get the runners home as the game ended when Josh Rolette smashed a hard ground ball between first and second and hit Captains base runner Jose Medina.
Schueller picked up the win for the Loons. With the win Schueller improves to 1-2 with a 4.84 ERA. Broom took the loss for Lake County falling to 0-1 with a 1.29 ERA.
The two clubs will finish the series on Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. Great Lakes will send Gerardo Camillo to the mound. Camillo a righthander is 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA. Kirk McCarty a lefty will take the hill for Lake County. McCarty is 4-9 with a 4.41 ERA.
